The English church in Funchal, in Rua do Quebra Costas, has stood for almost 190 years and is a vibrant part of life for dozens of British residents on Madeira island and for many thousands of people from all countries of the world.
Madeira island is a portuguese autonomous region. Because that, have a flag that you can see in Quinta Vigia, the official residence of the Madeira island gorvernment president.
I knew this building in Rua Ivens, north of the Jardim Municipal (municipal garden), for many years.
But had never aroused my attention to the top floor which has a different architecture in Funchal.
Every mondays, like today, the cruise ship AIDAstella returns to Funchal port i winter season. And, every week, some passangers cyling around the city in organized tours. I find some of them one of this days in Santa Catarina Park where there are a chapel with the same name.
In the city of Funchal and in all Madeira the water to irrigate lands is transported in channels, that we call "levadas", through the mountains and then distributed to the force of gravity by different houses. To divert water from its normal downward course, there are those covers that are placed in the "levada". There is a time for each person, according to the contract. Then the cover is removed and follows its route.
