These are the natural rocks (that we call in the island calhau) of the beaches that fringe the Madeira island.
Estas são as rochas naturais das praias que bordejam a ilha da Madeira, as quais chamamos de calhau.
What you see in the foreground is an artificial beach created last year in the Funchal coastline. It is pebble, like there is usually on the beaches of Madeira, but this is man-made. In the background, in yellow tones we see the four stars Hotel Porto Santa Madeira and the Fort São Tiago, where there is a restaurant O Forte and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

O que se vê em primeiro plano é uma praia artificial criada o ano passado no litoral do Funchal. É de calhau, que existe normalmente nas praias da Madeira, mas esta foi feita pelo homem. A new beach in Funchal.
After destroyed a natural beach near the town pier for the construction of the Praça do Povo (People's Square), a new marina and a new berth, made this artificial beach called Almirante Reis, because it is located in an area with this designation.

Depois de destruída uma praia natural junto ao cais da cidade para a construção da Praça do Povo, uma nova marina e um novo cais de acostagem, fizeram esta praia artificial chamada Almirante Reis, porque ficar situada numa zona com essa designação.
