These devices are the little that remains of the former Torreão factory, who transforming some years ago sugar cane into sugar. The building and its history was dismantled to build a garden.
The Torreão Factory was founded by William Hinton & Co in 1856.
As the engine had water, but when it was scarce in summer, the movement was established by a steam engine.
The unit closed in the 80s.
It was considered one of the most remarkable plants in the city and regarded as the most perfect in the world, since its power production reaches 500 tonnes of cane in 24 hours.
These devices can be seen at the Gardens of Santa Luzia, who came in place of the factory, whose entrance is free.

The gardens of Quinta Vigia, where is the official residence of the President of the Regional Government of Madeira, are always well maintained.
Despite controlling the entrance, can be visited free.
Besides the gardens, has a traditional "house of pleasure" and a privileged view of the Funchal port and the city.

Os jardins da Quinta Vigia, onde se encontra a residência oficial do presidente do Governo Regional da Madeira, estão sempre bem cuidados.
Apesar do controlo à entrada, podem ser visitados gratuitamente.
Além dos jardins, a quinta dispõe de uma "casinha de prazeres" e uma vista privilegiada para o porto do Funchal e para a cidade.
I made this picture in an old house in the Rua das Pretas (black street). I have not seen much interest in general, but closer I think this plan is happy.

I do not know the name of this plant that hasn't a great beauty. But I found it very interesting because it have the same leaves but with different colors. At least appeared me leaves and no flowers.

Não sei nome desta planta, na qual não vi grande beleza. Mas achei muito curioso o facto de ter folhas iguais mas com cores diferentes. Pelo menos pareceram-me folhas e não flores.
"The Sower" is a statue designed by the Madeiran Francisco Franco (1885-1955). It was made in 1923, when the sculptor was living in Paris.
The sculpture was displayed publicly for the first time in Funchal December 7 1936 when it is placed in the Praça de Tenerife.
30 years later was transferred to the main entrance of the former General Board of Funchal, the current Regional Government, in Avenida Zarco.
In 1989 he was installed on a large pedestal in the Parque de Santa Catarina where he remained until 2007.
From December 2008, the statue has become next to City Hall of Funchal, in an area of about 500 m2 enclosed by the Rua Gonçalves da Câmara south, the headquarters of the municipality to the north and the old building of Finance.

“O Semeador” é uma estátua da autoria do madeirense Francisco Franco (1885-1955). Foi feita em 1923, quando o escultor se encontrava a viver em Paris.
A escultura foi exposta publicamente no Funchal pela primeira vez a 7 de Dezembro de 1936 aquando da sua colocação na Praça de Tenerife.
30 anos mais tarde foi transferida para a entrada principal da antiga Junta Geral do Funchal, atual Governo Regional, na Av. Zarco.
Em 1989 foi instalada sobre um amplo pedestal no Parque de Santa Catarina onde permaneceu até 2007.
A partir de dezembro de 2008, a estátua passou a estar junto à Câmara Municipal do Funchal, numa área de cerca de 500 m2 delimitada pela Rua do Padre Gonçalves da Câmara a sul, pelo edifício sede da autarquia a norte e pelo antigo edifício das Finanças a nascente.

Curiously although I live in a democratic country, the security came and asked what I was shooting and why. I replied that the place is public. And it was also said that pictures aer to a photo site, this one.

Parecem dois extra-terrestres vermelhos, mas não são. Fiz esta imagem com o telemóel no exterior do Arquivo Regional da Madeira. São suas saídas de incêndio.
Curiosamente, embora viva num país democrático, o segurança veio perguntar o que andava a fotografar e para quê. Respondi que o local é público. Mesmo assim, disse também que era para um site de fotografias.
This photograph was taken inside the São Pedro (St. Peter) church. The construction began in 1590, but would only be completed in the eighteenth century. The church interior is decorated with tiles of the seventeenth century, paintings, jewelery and furniture from the XVII, XVIII, XIX and XX are also an integral part of the overall decor. Esta fotografia foi obtida no interior da igreja de São Pedro. Começou a ser construída em 1590, mas só ficaria concluída no século XVIII. O interior da igreja é decorada com azulejos do século XVII,pinturas, ourivesaria e mobiliário dos séculos XVII, XVIII, XIX e XX são igualmente parte integrante da decoração geral. Chamo a atenção particular para a torre desta igreja, coberto de azulejos, tal como acontece com outra da igreja de Santa Clara, a cerca de 300 metros.

Appearances can be deceiving. There is not a ship with a flag at the stern. What you see is a building with a roof recovered following the Madeira tradition.
The flag is from the city of Funchal, and belongs to the Natural History Museum of Funchal, a place that should be visited and revisited.

As aparências iludem. Não é um navio com uma bandeira na popa. É sim um edifício com a cobertura recuperada seguindo a tradição da ilha da Madeira. A bandeira, da cidade do Funchal, pertence ao Museu de História Natural do Funchal, um espaço que merece ser visitado e revisitado.
