This statue of Karl Briullov is one of several that exist in the Municipal Garden of Funchal.
I believe that for most of Madeira people and foreigners who discover it is just a illustrious unknown. Specifically this is a tribute to a classic Russian painter who lived from the late eighteenth century and the 50s of the nineteenth century.
Will have passed by the Madeira between 1849 and 1850, years that say match the Madeira period of Briullov.
According to experts, the works painted on Madeira we can highlight the box "View of Fort Pico in Madeira Island," painting offered then to his doctor António Alves da Silva, and that was about 150 years on the island until have be acquired by Russian Tretyakov gallery, from Margarida Lemos Gomes, since the work was part of his private collection.

Yesterday was a hard day in Funchal and in all island of Madeira. The constant rain and strong wind did not ease.
During afternoon, the wind southeast, unusual in the city, encouraged the marginal waves with very strong that this statue was tirelessly to try to sustain the fury of the sea filled with brown land washed away by streams that filled with heavy rains.
Special thanks to my friend and colleague Spinola warned that the waves, and suggested that would make this photo, because other day we had walked around the statue to see the best frameworks. This, with the waves, was one of them.
Without the usual camera I use a Canon, I used what was in my pocket, my phone BlackBerry.

This statue is new in town. I have not had time to read what it should. Therefore, I see no answers to many questions. I recognize the cap of "villain", traditional island of Madeira. Then I see half naked body of a woman. A cloth to cover their eyes and hand position seems to indicate that play a game popular in Portugal is called "cabra cega"
