Poucas pessoas conhecem este canhão ou bateria que a imagem apresenta. Ao lado dele constam mais outros. Estão tão bem enquadrados na paisagem o que faz com que um olhar desatento não os consiga encontrar. Faziam parte da artilharia de costa para defender a cidade e o Porto do Funchal.
Tanto quanto conheço, integram um plano nacional erguido no pós-guerra de Baterias Independentes de Defesa de Costa. Uma "exigência" da guerra fria, uma vez que depois da segunda guerra mundial Portugal aderiu à NATO em 1949.
Também se dizia que quando faziam disparos partiam alguns vidros nas casas.

Few people know about this cannon that the image presents. Beside him are others. They are so well framed in the landscape that makes an inattentive look unable to find them. They were part of the coast artillery to defend the city and the Port of Funchal.
As far as I know, they are part of a national plan erected in the post-war Independent Battles of Coast Defense. A "requirement" of the cold war, since after World War II Portugal joined NATO in 1949.
It was also said that when they shot some glass broke in the houses.
