The "peixe espada" black scabbard fish is the more traditional fish in Madeiran cuisine, whose island was caught the first time and are commercially exploited this kind of depth, who lives on average depths between 800 meters and 1200 meters.
The fish lives in the Atlantic ocean, between latitudes 69 ° N and 27 ° N , and longitudes 79 ° W and 3 W. Thus, it can be found in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the Strait of Denmark, Iceland and Norway to Madeira and the west coast of northern Africa.
There are no data that demonstrate when the black scabbard fish started to be caught in the waters of the archipelago, but Manoel Thomás, in his poem "The Insulana", in 1635, makes a reference to the sword, among other coastal fish and top.
What is known with some tightening is that, in 1839, this species was described to science, the English naturalist Rev. Richard Thomas Lowe, who gave him the name deAphanopus carbo, alluding to the fact that a species without fins pelvic visible (Aphanopus, Greek, without feet) and black color (carbo, Latin, black).
But surely what is known is that the fishermen were Madeira, Câmara de Lobos, which for decades were fishing deep sea sharks to extract oil for lighting and skins for sanding, who happened to have found the black scabbard fish . With it , began an artisanal fishery that continues today, making Madeira the first place in the world to develop a technique of directed fishing for a kind of depth.

I find the left painting in Funchal port one of this days.
I do not like the painting, that reminds graffiti. But this could be subjective. However, the truth is that is not covered in paintings that are usually made by the crew and passengers of ships and yachts to remenber their voyages.
And there's an aggravating that is not respecting that was already there at Thomson Majesty, taken in 2012, painting over a part.

The Savoy Hotel was built in 1912.
Over time the unit has been growing and increasing the number of rooms.
In the 20s boasted 4 stars and at the end of the 60 would change to 5 stars with the arrival of charter flights from Europe.
In the 70 undergoes a major transformation and has nothing to do with the original, whose architecture was-overlapping. Now has 13 floors and 337 rooms. It's a classic hotel.
In 2009 began to be demolished to make way for a new hotel would be built from scratch with 16 floors and 500 rooms.
The death of one of two partners, coupled with the adverse economic climate has made the work already undertaken stay as seen on the picture for some years now.

In the city of Funchal and in all Madeira the water to irrigate lands is transported in channels, that we call "levadas", through the mountains and then distributed to the force of gravity by different houses. To divert water from its normal downward course, there are those covers that are placed in the "levada". There is a time for each person, according to the contract. Then the cover is removed and follows its route.

In the Rua de Santa Maria, the street of the painted doors in old town of Funchal we can find many things like this Art Gallery in an on old building.

Flowers in Funchal city, near Santa Catarina Park and Funchal port

This photo shows the results of some works in the "ribeiras" (streams). Because that, the sculptural core left the centre of Rotunda do Infante was temporarely removed like you can see.

A few days ago I showed the other side of the works on the coast of the Bay of Funchal. This photoh is more comprehensive and gives a bit the size of the work being done

A "quinta" (like a farm) in Monte that burned in a large fire. The Monte sits high atop the city of Funchal and there are many important quintas in the capital of Madeira. Formerly, who had more money and resided in the city center, they was vacationing in this location with a magnificent view of the city.

Statue erected in Santa Catarina Park in honor of Christopher Columbus who "discovered" America where the Indians were already living. The navigator will have had some familiar links with the city of Funchal.

With the works in "ribeiras" (streams) and protection of the central coast of the Funchal bay, the city lost some of its charm near the sea. What you see here in the sea did not exist before these works.

The most often do not look at the ground beneath our feet when we walk like this cover concerning the distribution of water through the Funchal city.
